I paint abstract landscape drippy paintings (insta: @jmcewenart), and dabble in producing ambient music under the name "Gentle Sabotage" which you can find on Spotify and Apple music! I work from my studio in Belfast as part of the Vault Collective.
For the last 10 years I have been facilitating The Cothran Center's yearly trip to Northern Ireland, where we think about conflict and History, whilst meeting some amazing people and visiting interesting and beautiful places. I have been to Furman twice, and loved it.
The Cup Activity: The class (and leaders) were given an assignment to be completed before the first day of class. Everyone was given an empty cup, and the instructions were to (i) put several things in that cup that help to describe our identities, and (ii) bring that cup to class on the first day, and use it to introduce ourselves to one another.
If I were to put a few little objects in a cup that represented something about me, I would pick the following...
- a well used paintbrush, with years of history: I am most myself when I am lost in painting
- a pebble from the beach: This represents, love of nature and also speaks of being shaped by our history
- a midi cable, from my box of many: It's hard to represent electronic music production in a cup!
- a little enamel badge that says "Aye Dead on": It's a very Belfast expression, and represents my love for this complicated place.
I am looking forward to the MayX experience. Hoping to see Greece through many different lenses.
I am particularly interested in visiting again the workshop where the religious ikons are painted, and thinking again about art faith and history.
