Hey everyone! I’m Emma Turgeon from Greenville, South Carolina. I am a rising sophomore at Furman, and I have yet to declare a major. But I am currently feeling pulled to a major in Anthropology or History. One of my favorite things I have done at Furman so far is joining Dins Dialogue and becoming a peer facilitator. I’ve been learning how to get to know people, struggles, and solutions through meaningful conversation. I love that the liberal arts experience allows me to explore a variety of fields and departments. Further, that I get to learn from peers and professors with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and passions.
I am so incredibly excited for this May X trip. Greece has been a country on my travel bu
cket list for what feels like forever. I believe the desire started with my early obsession with the musical Mama Mia. That said, I also want to explore art history, philosophy, and culture. I’m excited to engage with the unknown to get to know myself better! To me, purpose isn’t about finding a strict definition or path. Rather, I think purpose is a lifelong journey. Of what? And for whom? That’s what I am looking forward to exploring.
I enjoy cooking, playing tabletop games, and making playlists on Spotify. I am an avid reader, always exchanging books with my mom and brother. I am an actor, and I have been a part of the arts scene in the Upstate for most of my life. I am also frequently picking up hobbies and trying new things. At the moment I have picked up photography, which I am looking forward to practicing on the trip! My dad loves to take pictures and used to carry his camera around everywhere when he was in college. So, I have been learning from the best.
First Day Cup Activity: We have been tasked with filling a solo cup with 3-5 items that help introduce ourselves and begin to answer the question "Who am I?". For my items I have an oyster shell for my family, a high school playbill for my interests, and a moonstone crystal for my friends. I might add one or two more, but I think these are a strong start!
