Caroline Tanis

Hi everyone!! My name is Caroline Tanis and I am a rising senior at Furman University, majoring in Health Sciences on the Occupational Therapy track! I am from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and I am so beyond thrilled to be going to Greece with this amazing group of people!

I chose to do this MayX because I often find myself caught in the constant momentum of life at Furman—moving from one commitment or task to the next, thinking about getting everything ready for grad school applications, and rarely giving myself the space to be present. I realized I’ve been so focused on what’s ahead that I haven’t truly taken time to reflect on where I am now. I’m always seeking to uncover more about myself—who I am beyond my academic achievements, what I genuinely value, and what brings me peace on a deeper level. This MayX felt like the perfect opportunity to slow down, unplug from daily pressures, and immerse myself in meaningful experiences. I’m especially excited for the chance to engage in thoughtful conversations with others who are equally curious, in a place steeped in intellectual and philosophical history. I hope this experience helps me reconnect with myself, gain clarity, and return with a renewed sense of purpose and presence. Plus, I absolutely love listening to ABBA, and one of my top favorite foods are olives, so going to Greece alone sold me!

The Cup Activity:  The class (and leaders) were given an assignment to be completed before the first day of class.  Everyone was given an empty cup, and the instructions were to (i) put several things in that cup that help to describe our identities, and (ii) bring that cup to class on the first day, and use it to introduce ourselves to one another.

In my introduction cup I have included:

  • A little Jesus – I love the Lord with all my heart!
  • A magnet that one patient made – I had the incredible opportunity to have an internship this past year and on my second visit with one patient, he painted me a purple flower magnet! It's truly a huge reminder of my “Why Occupational Therapy?” and also a reminder to stay young at heart!
  • A fortune  – I love little bits of wisdom I receive from mentors, peers, family, friends, and even little cookies! They really stick with me forever and guide me down the path of life!

I will leave y’all with 2 great jokes! :)

Why was the Greek statue always so calm?

        - It had a lot of inner-peace.

What do you call the Greek version of Spider-Man?

       Pita Parker!
